Dean was making sure he was intact. In the last episode, he was pretty much torn to shreds by unseeable hellhounds.
I too love season 1 Sammy. And in season 1 (well, the first half), I was a Sam!girl. And then I switched. And now I think I might be switching back. While at the same time maintaining the belief that Dean is far prettier.
