“No. Lilith didn’t kill Jo. I did.”

Sammy couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “You did what?!”

“I killed Jo. I had no choice, Sam. I –”

“No, I don’t want to hear your excuses,” Sam interrupted. “You obviously had a choice. You’ve chosen to help us so many times in the past, how could you not have a choice now?!”

“Sam, I’m sorry.” Ruby was all but kneeling on the floor, practically begging him for his forgiveness. Sammy turned from her and started pacing around the room. Dean still couldn’t say a word, but he could punch the demon, and he made use of this capability to clock her one in the jaw.

Sam was quite conflicted, wondering exactly what he should do about this. Jo had been a friend, and he had promised Ellen that they would kill the evil thing that had taken her daughter’s life. But Ruby had been useful up to this point. She had even allowed herself to be tortured by Alastair in order to further Sam’s plan. And she had saved his life, after Dean died. Does the good make up for the bad? Or do we waste her like any other evil thing we’ve hunted?

Dean was still beating her, but Sammy wasn’t paying any attention. He was too busy using that big brain of his to decide what to do next. Finally, he shouted, “Dean, that’s enough!”

His big brother turned to him, about to ask why Sammy would possibly let Ruby live after she’d killed Jo, but then he remembered that he couldn’t say anything. He pointed at his mouth and then back at the bitch on the floor, as if to say, “Sammy, tell her to let me talk again.”

“Ruby, let Dean go,” he commanded. And, as always, she obeyed. Sam watched as she pushed herself up from the ground and wiped the blood from the side of her mouth.

“You’ve got a hell of a left hook, Dean,” she taunted. Dean rolled his eyes as he rounded on her again. Sam jumped between them at the last second, taking one of those infamous left hooks to his right cheekbone in the process.

“Why the hell are you protecting this bitch, Sammy?!” Dean shouted. “She killed Jo! Why aren’t you wasting her right now? Chant some of your funky Latin exorcism crap and get this over with.”

“No, Dean, I’m not gonna kill her.”

“Look, Sam, I get that you two have a . . . ahem, connection . . . but that doesn’t mean that she can get away with killing Jo!”

“What if she really did have a good reason, Dean?” Sammy begged, giving his big brother the best puppy-dog look he could pull out.

“There is no good reason for that, Sammy! What’s gotten into you?”

“Lilith said that she would kill you two if I didn’t do it!” Ruby shouted, doing her best to break the two of them apart. “Castiel seems rather serious about keeping the two of you alive; you must be important players in the Apocalypse. So I did as I was commanded and killed your friend.”

“We can take care of ourselves,” Dean hissed. He was about to add his favorite expletive for Ruby to the end of this sentence when Sam stomped hard on his right foot. “What the hell was that for?!”

“Shut up, Dean,” Sammy whispered through his teeth. “Ruby’s not alone.”

Dean looked around them, searching for the glint of black (or white) eyes in the shadows. “I don’t see anyone, Sammy.”

“I know you don’t,” Sam taunted, rounding on Dean, eyes white and hand outstretched to kill.

“I’m sorry,” Ruby called from the doorway as she took of into the night.
