“I don’t see anyone, Sammy.”

“I know you don’t,” Sam taunted, rounding on Dean, eyes white and hand outstretched to kill.

“I’m sorry,” Ruby called from the doorway as she took off into the night.

---

Dean backed away as fast as he could, but Lilith was faster – being a demon, she had the upper hand all ready, so the element of surprise didn’t help matters. Before he could even begin to think about how to stop her without hurting Sammy, he was pinned against the wall.

“It’s been a while, Dean.” It was Sam’s voice, only with a different tone thrown in. “I am shocked to see you topside, truly. But you won’t be up here long. You broke our deal –”

“No,” Dean interrupted. “Castiel pulled me out. I didn’t ask to be saved,” he added gritting his teeth against the pain.

“That doesn’t matter,” Lilith responded quickly. “Your soul is mine, and now your brother’s is too.”

“Sammy! Sammy, if you can hear me, you need to fight her!” Dean screamed as Lilith called for her friendly hellhounds to come and feast on him again. “I won’t go back there, Sammy! Don’t let me go back there! SAM!” Lilith stepped back as Hell’s watchdogs played with Dean like a chew toy for the second time in under a year. “SAM!”

From the little Dean could see through the vision-blurring agony he was going through, he could tell that there was an inner battle going on within his brother.

---

“NO!” Sam shouted, gritting his teeth and forcing Lilith into a corner of his mind. “I won’t let you do this!” Then, he stretched out his hand over his dying brother and concentrated. He could not hear or see them, but Dean heard their yelping as they shrunk down to nothing. Dean could suddenly breathe again, but moving would be more difficult. The hounds had done a lot of damage and Dean had lost a lot of blood.

He looked up at Sammy as saw that his little brother was not moving. His eyes were wide open: one white as marble, like Lilith’s; one green-brown, Sam’s. He was frozen in place, and there was blood dripping from his nose. He was obviously fighting Lilith for control while at the same time keeping her from leaving. He must be trying to exorcise her.

Dean managed to crawl over to the wall and used it as leverage to pull himself to his feet. Every inch sent shooting pain all through his body, and all he wanted to do was lie still and go to sleep – but to do that would be to admit defeat, and Dean Winchester did not give up that easily.

Sam started coughing, and Dean turned around quickly, barely managing to support himself against the wall. With each cough a little more demon smoke left Sam’s body. He was exorcising her! Normally, Dean would have been pissed that Sammy was using his psychic stuff, but right now all he wanted was for his little brother to be all right.

Dean looked passed Sam for a split second and saw Castiel and Uriel in the doorway. They were shaking their heads and setting their jaws, preparing for something big; but Dean could not tell what that might be. All of the Lilith smoke had been forced out of Sammy, and now it was floating in circles around his feet. Then, it seeped into the floor, leaving only charred carpet behind.
